Umbra is a collaborative effort between Scott Candey of Gruntsplatter and Stephen Petrus of Murderous Vision. The idea for doing a collaborative project arose in late 1998 and despite one of us being in California and the other in Ohio, it developed quickly. By early 1999 we had completed enough material for a full length release as well as contributing a track to the "Baited Breath" double cassette compilation.

In early April 1999 Stephen visited and we were able to play a show. This performance was recorded, and was been released as "Perish: A Live Document", a Very limited edition CDR. Since the opportunity for us to play together may never arise again due to the geography between us we thought it would be nice to document it with a special release.

The full length album, "Unclean Spirit", was released by The Rectrix Records as their debut offering, and shows a varied approach while remaining within the sphere of dark experimental. Moving fluidly from dark ambient expanses to more abusive, grating textures and occasionally injecting rhythmic elements that at times emote meditative ritualism and at others tantruming machinery. It is a diverse but cohesive listen, rooted in a dirty lo-fi aesthetic and complimented by both contributors sounds while still emerging as a project unique unto itself. In addition to nine brand new tracks "Unclean Spirit" also features a track using the album material as soundsource reinterpreted by Azoikum as well as a new, more ambient mix of "The Conscious Dead," the track that appeared on the "Baited Breath" compilation.

Stephen continues to record as Murderous Vision, and contribute to In Death's Throes as well as maintain the record label Live Bait Recording Foundation. Scott continues his work with Gruntsplatter.
