Nechochwen (US) - Algonkian Mythos CD (Dark Horizon)
A stunning release filled with passion for instrumental classical guitar and the Native American heritage. Algonkian Mythos takes one back in time to the French and Indian war with stunning finger picked guitar work, traditional instrumentation, plus a very eclectic yearning for a long lost era that bleeds through the music. Algonkian goes beyond dark ambient, beyond apocalyptic folk, to embrace a very vibrant and colorfully diverse style that can only be described as "Nechochwen musical environs". Fans of classical, folk, new age and the acoustic workings of  Ulver, Sig:Ar:Tyr and others... this music is so far beyond those bands in talent and focus, inviting the listener to fall deep into Nechochwen's spell. Essential and amazing.
$11
Necropolis Necropolis (Rus) - Necrosphere CD (Cold Spring Records)
"Hailing from the Siberian land of Irkutsk, Russia, Necropolis came to Cold Spring's attention when they released the extremely limited (85 only) CDR "Necrosphere" - the soundtrack to the author's dreams and based on field recordings made in Taiga and disused military missile shafts. Cold Spring is reissuing this immense Dark Ambient creation - remastered with brand new, stunning artwork and an extra 14-minute long track."
$11
Nekroholocaust (US) - In Memories of Fire CD (Mercenary Musick)

Nenavist (Bul) - Nenavist CD (Wraith Productions)
Wraith Productions proclaims it's tenth release unto this world with the debut full length of Bulgaria's Nenavist. Nenavist is a vision of the disintegration of the Human, a burst of instinct, a work of isolation and loathing for the man-ruin and the pathetic world of "progress". Death.

NCO Nephenzy Chaos Order (Swe) - Pure Black Disease CD
The unbridled speed of the first few tracks on "Pure Black Disease" may initially bring one to draw comparisons with Marduk due to a similar affinity for wild aggression topped with meticulous harmonies, but as the disc unfolds, the similarities stop as Nephenzy Chaos Order offer up a grating performance that utilizes many staples of Swedish black metal to arrive at their Earth scorching sound. "Pure Black Disease" is an unforgiving assault against mankind and even when they ease off on the speed in favor of more layered and 3 dimensional riff work, there is a feeling of hopelessness and mental instability that flourishes as if that is NCO's own stamp of musical identity. For one, the guitar tone strikes me as original to the point of irritation, for when a palm muted crunch, or high end dissonant chord runs ignite the sound space, the guitar tone inspires images of some malnourished heathen repeatedly scraping a cheese grater over the charred metallic skull of a human hunting robot. Perhaps my description is an embellishment, but there are some definite steel flakes erupting within that guitar tone, but then it seems to subside a bit when tremolo riffs unite with the machine like performance of drummer M Axe. The vocals add to the unstable vibe created by NCO as M Chaos chooses a traditional black screech for most of this album, but does save his performance from dimensionless redundancy by striving to take it higher and letting his voice break so that feeling of lunacy may further infect the music.
$11
New Risen Throne (Ita)/Cruel Harvest (US) - Shadows over Humanity Split CD (God-Is-Myth Records)
Both bands offer a haunting view into the belly of dark ambient songscapes. Rich tones and nightmare visions make for optimal nachtmusic for those of you yearning for a break from the punishing metal onslaught.
$11
Nidsang (Swe) - The Mark of Death CD (Drakkar Productions)
Harsh and fast Black-Metal in the Swedish way. But not that fast and melodic as you may expect ! A bit like what WATAIN did in their earlier works, without the DISSECTION influence. Terrific vocals, a good dose of aggression and harshness this time sustained with powerful production, some more atmospheric parts inbetween, solid songs. An album to discover!
$11
Night Must Fall (Fin) - Dissonance of Thought MCD (Descending Towards Damnation)
Punishing blackened funeral doom. No drum machine here.... just the grit and slime of a real band. Powerful and huge sounding.
$8
Nightbringer - Temple of Not Split Nightbringer (US)/Temple of Not (US) - Rex Ex Ordine Throni Split CD (Full Moon Productions)
Nightbringer play some of the most searing and amazing black metal I've heard arise from US soil in ages. The 6 songs that make up their half of the split feature a very warm/full production and literally explode with malevolent sounding tremolo riff work and a cancerous vocal approach that will scar the heavens. Temple of Not supply the uneasy atmosphere with 2 lengthy tracks of chilling black ambient. Nightmarish soundscapes will transport your thoughts to darker times and have you looking over your shoulder in paranoia. Great split CD.
$11
Nigrescent Nigrescent (UK) - Palace of the Dark Light CD (Blackthrone Productions)
Solitarily composed black metal, spewing a cult dissonance and hatred. Melody seeps through a caustically harsh (treble dominant) audio field which is made even more hideous by the cancerous and barbaric vocal shrieks. From more mid paced musical breaks, to a faster/note based attack, the rhythm section is engaged at the push of a button. Thanks to the sound quality (everything is audible, just very tense), the synthetic backbone of Nigrescent doesn't detract from the overall snarl of this project. Nigrescent is a punishing dose of black metal for those that deem their blasphemy fierce and cult basted. A man and his drum machine cannot be thwarted.
$11
Nile Nile (US) - In Their Darkened Shrines CD (Relapse Records)
The Egyptian tyrants of turbo death have returned with their most developed and groundbreaking effort. "Shrines…" triumphs where others in this genre fail at incorporating emotion and an earth moving tone to arrive at a level of technical death metal that will shake your soul, as well as impress with the complexity and brilliance of the riffs/overall composition. This is the brutal death album of the year.
$11

$11
Nordvargr (Swe) - Pyrrhula CD (Cold Spring)
Partly based on an old Swedish folktale, Pyrrhula ("doomlord") is a pitch black journey into utter darkness. This is a tale of foreboding doom... a portent of dark times to come... a blight on the face of this earth. These eight Black Ambient / Doom / Droneworks were brought forth from the abyss of Villa Bohult exclusively for Cold Spring and contain the malevolent vocals of Lord Nordvargr himself!. "Beware the small creatures of light, they only bring misery and death upon the enlightened ones. For they will paint their breast with blood and reap your unborn angels."
$11

November's Doom November's Doom (US) - To Welcome the Fade CD (Dark Symphonies)
With a stunning production provided by renowned producer Neil Kernon, November's Doom have returned with their most gut wrenching doom opus to date. ND flow through varying levels of emotional torment as Paul (Vocals) reflects on his feelings as he deals with a debilitating physical ailment. Crushingly heavy guitars weave in and out of loud one moment, and quiet the next dynamics as if to push Paul's rage and sorrow over the edge as the man pours out his heart through 10 amazing tracks of melancholy. Deep death vocals drain into equally passionate clean singing and the occasional female voice for even more variety. November's Doom are a great band that have easily surpassed the formative years of their peers (My Dying Bride) in regards to originality and conviction.
$11
Nox Inferi (OZ) - Adverse Spheres CD (Those Opposed Records)

Old Wainds (Rus) – Religion of Spiritual Violence CD (Negative Existence)
Frost Bitten Black Metal From The Arctic Circle! Extremely well written Satanic Black Art that paints a desolate soundscape created by the Northern Wind of malice, churches in ruins, frozen rivers where the moonshadows gleam eternally, morbid dwarf trees amongst wastelands of black moss, and pale stars that echo the snowfall... $11
Orlog (Ger) - Reinigende Feuer CD (Det Germanske Folket)
This well designed and produced CD was a massive surprise. Orlog perform a very convincing attack of straight up Swedish black metal, focusing on the era of Sacramentum, Dawn and the like. If you like your harmonies searing in a twin guitar attack, then this band will fill every desire with lofty melodies and sharp vocals sure to teleport you back to 1995. Excellent.
$11
Ornaments of Sin Ornaments of Sin (Fra) - Inhale Zyklon-B MCD (Total Holocaust Records)
An excellent release of misanthropic and hateful black metal from France. 6 grating tracks of underground perfection, including a Burzum cover. Melodies singed by the fires of hell envelope a cancerous vocal delivery that gives this 2 man band a bit of uniqueness for their black art to destroy with intolerance and elitism.

$11
Paragon Impure (Bel) - To Gaius (For The Delivery Of Agrippina) CD (Goatawarex)
There's a definite hypnotic quality to this material, in that Transylvanian Hunger type of unrelenting push. Paragon Impure are a direct reflection of the state of modern underground black metal, but they are well written and exploding with a truly evil conviction. This is their latest release.
$11
Parricide Parricide (Pol) - Crude CD (Jackhammer Music)
Crude contains some very atypical death metal. The rhythms avoid the mosh trappings in favor of evil riffage that brings to mind the once booming heyday of the death metal scenes in Holland/Denmark. Guttural vocals and a predominant mid-paced tempo allow these 9 tracks to develop on the basis of content, rather than delivery.
$11
Peccatum Peccatum (Nor) - Lost in Reverie CD (The End)
Out of the handful of Peccatum releases I have heard, Lost in Reverie is by far Ihsahn and Ihriel's most experimental and engaging release to date. The metal tracks on this CD lash out with blackened technical aggression and Ihsahn's spiteful vox, only to drift off into a warm sea of soundscapes and more contemporary musical styles/ideas where Ihriel's atypical, but greatly improved vocal style enchants and carries the ragged metal listener off into more adventurous territories.
$11
Perished Perished (Nor) - Seid CD (Displeased Records)

Portal (OZ) - Swarth Digipak CD (Profound Lore Records)
Taken from the Profound Lore site: "

The approach to Portal’s style of death metal has always treaded the fine line between sheer madness and the intricately artful.  Cinematic in scope, like a death metal interpretation of The Cabinet Of Dr. Cagliari or the death metal soundtrack to an ancient silent arthouse flick gone terribly awry, Portal have pretty much transcended the interpretation of what death metal should portray, and simply inverted and twisted it to no end. Even moreso with "Swarth".

Almost serving as the missing link between Portal’s previous abominations (namely “Seepia” and “Outre”), “Swarth” continues to bring the band’s aesthetic to new disturbing levels of unease.  Musically, “Swarth” is very labyrinth-like, very claustrophobic and suffocating where twisted counterpoint and scathing dissonance merge with earth scraping atmosphere to unveil the inevitable rising chaos.

And as usual, with every Portal release, what is surely to divide and polarize death metal enthusiasts who either realize the substance, depth, and genius that Portal portray and the ones who simply cannot comprehend or understand the enigma that is Portal.  And those who continue to be indifferent and can’t seem to form any kind of opinion or expression because Portal’s music is so fucked, uneasy, and just wrong in a way that it continues to push and tear the boundaries of extremity within death metal like no other band can through the filth, mire, and the utter crawling chaos that unearths itself through each chapter that creates a Portal release as a whole.  Nonetheless, no death metal band has created such debate and dialogue as Portal have, and surely with “Swarth”, such debate and dialogue will no doubt continue, confuse, and perplex. Nonetheless, this is how Portal's music, in a way, thrives.

Packaged in a stunning gatefold hard cover Stoughton produced 5 x 5 digi-sleeve, with a 16-page booklet and a designed inner sleeve which houses the CD"

The Ravenous Ravenous, The (US) - Blood Delerium CD (Redstream)
This sickened work of filth is hands down the best, most twisted release yet to arise from the super group known as The Ravenous (Featuring Chris Reifert, Danny Coralles, Clint Bower and Killjoy). Detuned Autopsy riffage is still the main course, but Chris Riefert and his maggoty band of gore slingers have really pulled together on this material to make it something truly disturbing, yet infinitely heavy, memorable and bloated with an old death metal greatness largely forgotten by the "new school". "Blood Delirium" contains some of the best movie sample accompaniment I have ever heard. In many cases, they have made the vocal samples a rhythmic/integral part of the music, acting as a third vocal line. Very interesting indeed. Reifert and Killjoy have blended each of their tortured vocal styles together seamlessly. Both vocalists offset and share lyrical lines with reckless abandon, adding to the layered mayhem that writhes above the punk/death/doom foundation like a rotting dog. The Ravenous have developed to something far more important to the staying power of real death metal, than the super group they started off as. In my eyes, this is the proper reanimation of Autopsy's glorious corpse. Get it!
$11
Red Harvest Red Harvest (Nor) - Cold Matter CD
Technologically advanced Norge metal featuring members from other popular bands and a black metal influence.
$11
The Red King Red King, The (US) - Vitreolvm Digipak CD (Dark Symphonies)
Featuring Johann Bran Cleereman from the experimental black metal entity Corvus Corax, The Red King takes us on a neo classical journey through grief and hopelessness. Lush orchestration casts a looming shadow of dread, for Johann's varied singing/black metal screaming style to further torment the emotions with inspired experimentation. There is no metal music on this release, just really well done classically inspired music, inspiring introspective reflection. Awesome digipak design sets the tone for this opus.
$8
Remembrance (Fra) - Frail Visions CD (Total Rust)

Runemagick (Swe) - Voyage to Desolation/Dawn of the End CD (Enucleation)
Hailing from the darkest depths of Surte, Sweden, Runemagick evoke feelings of utter desolation and despair with their new album, Voyage to Desolation/Dawn of the End. Started in late 1990 and focused on playing a mid-tempo death/doom style of metal, they took inspiration from the classic death/black metal bands: Celtic Frost, Bathory, Autopsy, and Hellhammer. Chock full of heavier than thou riffage cohered with haunting leads and blackened undertones, this album brings to mind the darkness and despair of a plodding funeral procession. Crushing and deliberate at one point, moody and distant in the next, Runemagick aurally depicts the dreary murk and fog that embodies the coldest, most dimsal graveyard Sweden has to offer. This version offers one new track not found on the European release.
$9

I expected standard black metal with a name like Satanic Funeral, but this band is more into the ultra low pig vox chaos and blunt, stripped to the bloody stump attack of simplistic black death. Imagine Ildjarn with more melody and recording clarity. Barbaric. Enjoyable.
$11
Sathanas Sathanas (US) - Thy Dark Heavens CD (Blackmetal.com)
This longstanding US band returns with even more conviction and well written blasphemy as Sathanas skillfully walks the line between black and death metal. Plodding rhythms, and varied vocal styles takes us back to the olden days of metal where blast beats were unheard of, and bands relied on their song/riffwriting strengths to supply the heavy/ugliness/evil. Excellent album.

SIG:AR:TYR  SIG:AR:TYR (Can) - Sailing the Seas of Fate CD (Morbid Winter Records)
This is an amazingly gifted piece of music. Yngwie Malmsteen/Andy LaRoque caliber classical guitar instrumentals pile on the mystical aura of old, for other tracks built upon apocalyptic folk and Viking era Bathory to further empower the passion and uniqueness of Sailing the Seas of Fate.

SIG:AR:TYR (Can) - Beyond the North Winds CD (Morbid Winter Records)
The stunning follow-up to "Sailing the Seas of Fate", "Beyond the North Winds" is even more steeped in Bathory musical lore with less instrumentals and more actual songs proper that embrace the Viking metal aesthetic with rich plodding compositions, stellar solo work and epic progressions that pile on the dense harmony. Silva Nigra (Czech Rep) - Epocha CD Ravenheart/Ashen Productions)
Epocha is the fourth album of Czech Black Metal band Silva Nigra. The music has shifted into more technical, but still very catchy melodic musical passages. Each song lives its own life and doesn’t imitate any other musical element from the past. Individual songs are unique because of their Thrash Metal features and lively guitar riffs, resulting in a very compelling atmosphere.

Sourvein Sourvein (US) - Will to Mangle CD (Southern Lord)
Sourvein is a lethal union of the souls that were in other such punishing bands as Buzz-oven and 13. Produced by Billy Anderson, "Will to Mangle" is a snarled blow to the system with gritty/deep guitars and a plodding hit of sludge. Angry riffs crawl to the beat while venomous notes rip over the surface to inject a much needed hit of melody. This one will make you ache.

Splinterskin (US) - Wayward Souls CD (Cold Spring)
Splinterskin unveils his spell after years of solitude and hermetic isolation, in the form of a harsh, dark folk music.  His tales are told using an old classical guitar accompanied by haunting vocals, violin, and soothing whispers cradled in the delicate atmospheres of autumn. A collection of tales blending life and death, entities and creatures, hidden wisdom, unknown places, pain and suffering, folklore, possession, insanity, nature and the dark world that surrounds. Yet there are no words to truly describe Splinterskin's message or music.

Stroszek (Ita) - Songs of Remorse Digipak CD (God is Myth Records)
"The band's namesake (Stroszek) comes from the WERNER HERZOG film of the same name and is the perfect moniker for a band with such a gloomy atmosphere. While the band contains members of one of Italy's most respected black metal acts FROSTMOON ECLIPSE, this should be looked upon as a separate entity and not just a 'side project'. With carefully strummed minor key acoustic guitars, deliberate yet restrained piano lines, bursts of heaviness added for texture and deep, lush clean sung vocals that relay a sense of dread lurking beneath the surface, 'songs of remorse' is perhaps at once one of the most melancholic yet accessible albums of 2007..." Taken from the God is Myth site

From the evil spawned by Masochist, Summon divulged their putrid seed of blackness upon the world with Dark Descent of Fallen Souls. Well produced, and raging with a furious pace of well considered black metal, Summon have been manipulating the black arts long before most of today's US black warriors were through carrying a lunchbox to school. A full production helps empower the greatness on this debut album.

This is hands down, Summon's most amazing album to date. Recorded and produced by James Murphy, And the Blood Runs Black is a blistering shot of fast and expertly written blackened death thrash designed to summon your soul to hell. Excellent sound and a dead ringer cover of Venom's "Buried Alive". Summon have been at it for over 10 years and they keep getting better.
$11
Superchrist Superchrist (US) - South of Hell CD (Autopsy Kitchen Records)
Dirty Motorhead worship with mind slaying hooks and sing a long chorus'. This is the best-produced album by these guys to date and it really gives a lot of power to the hook oriented, verse/chorus/verse/chorus nature of this well written material. So much power erupts from Black's thundering Richenbacher bass tone, it injects the power chord dominant affinity in the guitar lines with that extra kick in the ass. It all boils down to the songs and Superchrist have established a simplistic formula that really works well for them. The solos have noticeably stepped out of the Frehley worship of the older material, to get a lot bluesier and more complex, though not losing sight of being tuneful enough for the listener to walk away from a track with the solo stuck in their head. After a dead nuts cover of Motorhead's "Metropolis", Superchrist makes it know as to what alter they bend their knee and they don't give 2 shits that they wear their Motorhead worship on their sleeves. In fact... this band benefits from the influence and have dug in at the ready to carry the torch for their idols once the seemingly indestructible Lemmy finally escapes this mortal coil. Superchrist rule... plain and simple.
$11
Superchrist (US) - Headbanger CD (Professor Black)

Tenebrae in Perpetuum (Ita) - Antico Misticismo CD (Debemur Morti Productions)
Taken from the Debemur Morti Prod site: "TENEBRAE IN PERPETUUM is back with a brand new freezing full length. "Antico Misticismo" (Ancient Mysticism) brings us 7 new hymns of pure cold & hateful Black Metal with an atmosphere few bands managed to put into their anthems. The bleak production, the desperate & odious screams, the intense and sorrowful melodies accompanied by fast drums alternated some times by slower parts, the whole opus is a glorification of Darkness. Taking the mysterious and gloomy atmosphere from "Onori Funebri Rituali" into a deeper dimension, "Antico Misticismo" present a higher level of composition and structure of the hymns, in which one can touch the revulsive feelings ingeniously orchestrated by their creator."

Tenhornedbeast (UK) - My Horns are a Flame to Draw Down the Truth Digipak CD (Cold Spring)
The TenHornedBeast rises again.

In the summer of 2007 Cold Spring Records released “The Sacred Truth”, the first CD by TenHornedBeast. A dark and menacing soundscape of funereal ambience and soaring, burning feedback.

“My Horns Are A Flame To Draw Down The Truth” sees five new compositions from black ambient / doom overlord Christopher Walton, taken from the same sessions that gave forth “The Sacred Truth”.

“My Horns Are A Flame To Draw Down The Truth” consists of three remixes / expansions / contractions of pieces from the debut album "The Sacred Truth" and two totally new compositions in a similar style to this dark masterpiece.

Walton has stripped the songs to their bare bones and allowed them space to breathe again. This album is all-new but continues the atmosphere of the debut and can be considered a companion piece. Presented in a matt-laminate, spot-varnished digipak.

T.O.M.B. (US) - Macabre Noize Royale CD (Todestrieb Records)
Taken from Metal Archives!
T.O.M.B. is a mysterious, unnamed entity well known for crafting the darkest
noise recordings with the aid of nothing but field recordings. With Macabre
Noize Royale, T.O.M.B. has set out to push the boundaries further than ever
before.
To collect the field recordings T.O.M.B. travelled and trespassed through
Pennsylvania’s darkest landmarks including:
Bethlehem Steel Works - builder of large calibre guns during WWI and WWII
Eden Hall Church - 157 year old gothic church destroyed from arson
Laurel Hill Cemetery - 170 year old cemetery
Lambertville High School - students burned alive 30 years ago, site of
countless suicides since.
Each location has a disturbing history and they have become locations of
multiple ghost sightings and unexplained deaths.

Through these field recordings, smashing recording rods into massive steel
structures and ancient crypt doors, T.O.M.B. reawakens the decaying structures
and the agonizing history they hold sealed.
The recordings are then crafted into the darkest, heaviest BLACK NOISE ever
recorded. And for the first time full Black Metal / Industrial tracks have been
created.

Macabre Noize Royale is T.O.M.B.’s most diverse album by far. Integrating pure
noise with ambience, Industrial and Black Metal. The clear intention is to push
the boundaries of Black Noise sound manipulation and continue to shock the
listener (both fans and newcomers).

(V.E.G.A.) (Ita) - Cocaine CD (Debemur Morti Productions)
Taken from the Debemur Morti Prod website: "Started back in 1998, (V.E.G.A.) is rather unknown entity coming out from Italy which recorded an album titled "Cocaine" in 2002. First released in an edition of 333 12" LP by the Italian label "Legioni dell' Arcangelo", it is now made available in a limited Digipack CD (with different cover) and an unlimited jewel box version. Enough said as introduction... what is it to get in this "Cocaine" ?
Many are those fooled by this explicit title, thinking this album is an ode to the "white powder".. whereas it is not. "Cocaine" is pure mental sickness... an unconscious travel into your own self.
Fast & furious drumming, insane guitar riffs accompanied by a thundering bass, screamed out vocals ranging from totally sick to more mesmerized "stoned" voice... each new song is another strike into your brain. Musically close to "Black Metal", it would be yet a mistake to stick (V.E.G.A.) to that kind since their influences are many.
Fast Psychotik & Eerie Musick... a wise mixture of Extreme Metal with an "Electronic" touch in their sound.
Addictive... once you'll enter the Vacuum Era Gelid Atmosphere, it won't be easy to return into your conscious reality.
No need to get yourself a new needle, inject "Cocaine" and feed your own insanity....
"Upon injection, cocaine reaches the brain in a matter of seconds, and the exhilarating rush that follows can be so intense that it induces some users to vomit uncontrollably"...
$11

Velnias (US) - Sovereign Nocturnal Digipak CD (God is Myth Records)
"The bands music can be best described as a combination of sorrowful black metal with a very doomy atmosphere, combined with elements of folk. Although the band definitely has their own sound, one could easily find comparisons to bands like OPETH, AGALLOCH, PRIMORDIAL & WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM. ?Sovereign Nocturnal?, the bands debut album is miles ahead of their 2007 demo Pacing the Cyclic Nether in terms of maturity, songcraft & production. With the three songs combining for a total running time of 41 minutes & 15 seconds the emphasis has been laid upon a musical foundation of progressive yet feral riffs intertwining with delicate passages that only make the heavier parts that much more potent, not unlike early Opeth & Agalloch! Combined with lyrical content based upon the premise that the human race is insignificant compared to the grand power and prestige of nature this is a debut album that should not be dismissed!" Taken from the God is Myth site. The disc comes in an eco friendly CD wallet.

Wodensthrone (UK) - Loss (Bindrune Recordings)
"Loss" is a completely stunning display of epic, world building Pagan black metal, burning with the fires of England's ancient culture and antiquity. Brilliantly captured in Romania by Negura Music, the recording sessions reveal an otherworldly tone and rich atmosphere that hasn't been this majestically sculpted since the formative years of Emperor. "Loss" is a total escape from the modern complexities and uninspired cookie-cutter "product" turned out by the current black metal scene, to embrace the true power of a time that was alive with conviction and musical exploration. Traditional/folk instrumentation, soaring guitar/synth harmonies, and tortured vocals ride upon the dense aura so brilliantly created by Wodensthrone.
