Nachtmystium (US) - Assassins: Black Meddle PT. 1 CD

Nephenzy Chaos Order (Swe) - Pure Black Disease CD The unbridled speed of the first few tracks on "Pure Black Disease" may initially bring one to draw comparisons with Marduk due to a similar affinity for wild aggression topped with meticulous harmonies, but as the disc unfolds, the similarities stop as Nephenzy Chaos Order offer up a grating performance that utilizes many staples of Swedish black metal to arrive at their Earth scorching sound. "Pure Black Disease" is an unforgiving assault against mankind and even when they ease off on the speed in favor of more layered and 3 dimensional riff work, there is a feeling of hopelessness and mental instability that flourishes as if that is NCO's own stamp of musical identity. For one, the guitar tone strikes me as original to the point of irritation, for when a palm muted crunch, or high end dissonant chord runs ignite the sound space, the guitar tone inspires images of some malnourished heathen repeatedly scraping a cheese grater over the charred metallic skull of a human hunting robot. Perhaps my description is an embellishment, but there are some definite steel flakes erupting within that guitar tone, but then it seems to subside a bit when tremolo riffs unite with the machine like performance of drummer M Axe. The vocals add to the unstable vibe created by NCO as M Chaos chooses a traditional black screech for most of this album, but does save his performance from dimensionless redundancy by striving to take it higher and letting his voice break so that feeling of lunacy may further infect the music. | $11

Nightbringer (US)/Temple of Not (US) - Rex Ex Ordine Throni Split CD (Full Moon Productions) Nightbringer play some of the most searing and amazing black metal I've heard arise from US soil in ages. The 6 songs that make up their half of the split feature a very warm/full production and literally explode with malevolent sounding tremolo riff work and a cancerous vocal approach that will scar the heavens. Temple of Not supply the uneasy atmosphere with 2 lengthy tracks of chilling black ambient. Nightmarish soundscapes will transport your thoughts to darker times and have you looking over your shoulder in paranoia. Great split CD. |

Nigrescent (UK) - Palace of the Dark Light CD (Blackthrone Productions) Solitarily composed black metal, spewing a cult dissonance and hatred. Melody seeps through a caustically harsh (treble dominant) audio field which is made even more hideous by the cancerous and barbaric vocal shrieks. From more mid paced musical breaks, to a faster/note based attack, the rhythm section is engaged at the push of a button. Thanks to the sound quality (everything is audible, just very tense), the synthetic backbone of Nigrescent doesn't detract from the overall snarl of this project. Nigrescent is a punishing dose of black metal for those that deem their blasphemy fierce and cult basted. A man and his drum machine cannot be thwarted. | $11

Nile (US) - In Their Darkened Shrines CD (Relapse Records) The Egyptian tyrants of turbo death have returned with their most developed and groundbreaking effort. "Shrines…" triumphs where others in this genre fail at incorporating emotion and an earth moving tone to arrive at a level of technical death metal that will shake your soul, as well as impress with the complexity and brilliance of the riffs/overall composition. This is the brutal death album of the year. |

November's Doom (US) - To Welcome the Fade CD (Dark Symphonies) With a stunning production provided by renowned producer Neil Kernon, November's Doom have returned with their most gut wrenching doom opus to date. ND flow through varying levels of emotional torment as Paul (Vocals) reflects on his feelings as he deals with a debilitating physical ailment. Crushingly heavy guitars weave in and out of loud one moment, and quiet the next dynamics as if to push Paul's rage and sorrow over the edge as the man pours out his heart through 10 amazing tracks of melancholy. Deep death vocals drain into equally passionate clean singing and the occasional female voice for even more variety. November's Doom are a great band that have easily surpassed the formative years of their peers (My Dying Bride) in regards to originality and conviction. |

October Falls (Fin) - The Streams of the End CD (Debemur
Morti Productions) Taken from the Debemur Morti Prod site: "On ‘The Streams Of The End’, OCTOBER FALLS re-materialises in a bolder incarnation, presenting a fiercer face that casts the Finnish one-man act in a revealing new light. While traces of a glorious acoustic past remain palpable, OCTOBER FALLS embellishes trademark orchestral folk with a harsher edge, infusing majestic compositions with unprecedented menace smothered in an atmosphere of forlorn tragedy. The second mini album from Mikko Lehto comprises four sorrowful laments – closely themed to fashion a 22-minute expression of absolute despair. Lush tones create a morose mood, while the cold manifestations drift slowly, reverberating off wistful woodland and caressing fecund foliage in some dark, wintry forest at the heart of the Great North. The songs are suffused in diversity and dynamic, sometimes serene and soothing but also generating sensations of inconsolable grief, tortured anguish and utter desperation. Quiver and cower beneath the might of nature, as gloom and despondency infect your isolated essence, giving rise to a well of emotions condemned to lie dormant in those untouched by OCTOBER FALLS’ rich arrangements. Allow the sparse, chilly landscape to engulf your soul, while the artist’s singular vision shrouds you in mist and shatters your world. Rich, complex and ritualistic, the altered state of OCTOBER FALLS as represented on ‘The Streams Of The End’ whispers long-forgotten tales of acts committed under foggy night skies, with only shadows and silhouettes as witnesses. Atypical and extraordinary, this mini album sees one of Finland’s most enigmatic forces explore a verdant new terrain that few before have dared to tread." |

Ravenous, The (US) - Blood Delerium CD (Redstream) This sickened work of filth is hands down the best, most twisted release yet to arise from the super group known as The Ravenous (Featuring Chris Reifert, Danny Coralles, Clint Bower and Killjoy). Detuned Autopsy riffage is still the main course, but Chris Riefert and his maggoty band of gore slingers have really pulled together on this material to make it something truly disturbing, yet infinitely heavy, memorable and bloated with an old death metal greatness largely forgotten by the "new school". "Blood Delirium" contains some of the best movie sample accompaniment I have ever heard. In many cases, they have made the vocal samples a rhythmic/integral part of the music, acting as a third vocal line. Very interesting indeed. Reifert and Killjoy have blended each of their tortured vocal styles together seamlessly. Both vocalists offset and share lyrical lines with reckless abandon, adding to the layered mayhem that writhes above the punk/death/doom foundation like a rotting dog. The Ravenous have developed to something far more important to the staying power of real death metal, than the super group they started off as. In my eyes, this is the proper reanimation of Autopsy's glorious corpse. Get it! |

Sear Bliss (Hun) - Glory and Perdition CD (Redstream) The dark and black metal blend of this bands style brings to mind the classic Samael years such as Ceremony of Opposites and Blood Ritual, meaning the riffs and overall vibe of the songs is indeed evil sounding, but possesses a laid back aura that really sucks me into the core of this music. Music really can grab your thoughts and inspire astral travel and this is one of those bands that somehow harness that mystical inspiration to wander. Along with guest vocals from the ever godly pipes of Attila on the tracks "Birth of Eternity" and "Shores of Death", Andras Nagy's vocal performance is very solid and adds a warm push to the ever shifting moods found on this album as various effects (vocoder) on occasion give his excellent black metal snarl/screams an added layer of surprise and creativity. It is nothing for Sear Bliss to step out of a blasting climax, into a dreary refrain as on "Night Journey" where clean guitar lines help to show the listener the way into the uncharted realms of the mind. A more ethnic/cultural vibe creeps into the title track with a definite Egyptian feel in the synth and riff work to add an even more expansive scale exploration for their music to dig in with enthusiastic flair. An excellently warm production seems to highlight the very essence of the Sear Bliss aesthetic. With the synth and trombone accompaniment, there is at times a lot going on in this music and a full production strengthens the outcome, almost adding what could be considered a phantom element to this bands mystical delivery. |

SIG:AR:TYR (Can) - Beyond the North Winds CD (Morbid Winter Records) The stunning follow-up to "Sailing the Seas of Fate", "Beyond the North Winds" is even more steeped in Bathory musical lore with less instrumentals and more actual songs proper that embrace the Viking metal aesthetic with rich plodding compositions, stellar solo work and epic progressions that pile on the dense harmony. You can actually feel the sea spray and bite of winter upon your face as you set out on this amazing musical journey. Essential listening. |

Skepticism (Fin) - Alloy CD (Redstream) After a lengthy hiatus, the lords of funeral doom have returned with 6 new tracks of their essential craft. A bit clearer than the moss laden anthems in their back catalog, Alloy piles on the depression and isolation with a very well produced and esoteric album. Yet another essential release from this mystical band. |

Solefald (Nor) - In Harmonia Universali CD (Century Media) Easily my favorite release from this duo since their Linear Scaffold debut. In Harmonia is a moody creature featuring lavish orchestration and inspiring moments of metal manipulation. If you are expecting black metal, you will be disappointed. If you seek open minded and free songwriting, this is the emotive album for you. |

Sombrous (??) - Transcending the Umbra CD (Forever Plagued Records) Taken from the Forever Plagued site: "Electro ambience that will put you in a trance or hypnotic state. I've heard from a few people that they listen to this to help sleep as well. A very overlooked ambient project, even though this has gotten much praise from well respected individuals in the scene." For fans of Raison de Etre and the like. Mystical journeys for the mind. |

Sourvein (US) - Will to Mangle CD (Southern Lord) Sourvein is a lethal union of the souls that were in other such punishing bands as Buzz-oven and 13. Produced by Billy Anderson, "Will to Mangle" is a snarled blow to the system with gritty/deep guitars and a plodding hit of sludge. Angry riffs crawl to the beat while venomous notes rip over the surface to inject a much needed hit of melody. This one will make you ache. | $11

Spiculum Iratus (US)/Bestial Incarnation (US) -
Monuments of Decimation Split CD (Baneful Genesis Records) 7 tracks from Spiculum Iratus. 5 tracks from Bestial Incarnation. Both bands compliment each other well... well considered and sharp black metal. More focus on songs with substance, rather than blast all the time. |

Stroszek (Ita) - Songs of Remorse Digipak CD (God is
Myth Records) "The band's namesake (Stroszek) comes from the WERNER HERZOG film of the same name and is the perfect moniker for a band with such a gloomy atmosphere. While the band contains members of one of Italy's most respected black metal acts FROSTMOON ECLIPSE, this should be looked upon as a separate entity and not just a 'side project'. With carefully strummed minor key acoustic guitars, deliberate yet restrained piano lines, bursts of heaviness added for texture and deep, lush clean sung vocals that relay a sense of dread lurking beneath the surface, 'songs of remorse' is perhaps at once one of the most melancholic yet accessible albums of 2007..." Summon (US) - Dark Descent of Fallen Souls CD (Blackened Moon Productions) From the evil spawned by Masochist, Summon divulged their putrid seed of blackness upon the world with Dark Descent of Fallen Souls. Well produced, and raging with a furious pace of well considered black metal, Summon have been manipulating the black arts long before most of today's US black warriors were through carrying a lunchbox to school. A full production helps empower the greatness on this debut album. |

Superchrist (US) - South of Hell CD (Autopsy Kitchen Records) Dirty Motorhead worship with mind slaying hooks and sing a long chorus'. This is the best-produced album by these guys to date and it really gives a lot of power to the hook oriented, verse/chorus/verse/chorus nature of this well written material. So much power erupts from Black's thundering Richenbacher bass tone, it injects the power chord dominant affinity in the guitar lines with that extra kick in the ass. It all boils down to the songs and Superchrist have established a simplistic formula that really works well for them. The solos have noticeably stepped out of the Frehley worship of the older material, to get a lot bluesier and more complex, though not losing sight of being tuneful enough for the listener to walk away from a track with the solo stuck in their head. After a dead nuts cover of Motorhead's "Metropolis", Superchrist makes it know as to what alter they bend their knee and they don't give 2 shits that they wear their Motorhead worship on their sleeves. In fact... this band benefits from the influence and have dug in at the ready to carry the torch for their idols once the seemingly indestructible Lemmy finally escapes this mortal coil. Superchrist rule... plain and simple. |

Tenebrae in Perpetuum (Ita) -
Antico Misticismo CD (Debemur Morti
Productions) Taken from the Debemur Morti Prod site: "TENEBRAE IN PERPETUUM is back with a brand new freezing full length. "Antico Misticismo" (Ancient Mysticism) brings us 7 new hymns of pure cold & hateful Black Metal with an atmosphere few bands managed to put into their anthems. The bleak production, the desperate & odious screams, the intense and sorrowful melodies accompanied by fast drums alternated some times by slower parts, the whole opus is a glorification of Darkness. Taking the mysterious and gloomy atmosphere from "Onori Funebri Rituali" into a deeper dimension, "Antico Misticismo" present a higher level of composition and structure of the hymns, in which one can touch the revulsive feelings ingeniously orchestrated by their creator." |
